akim was born to a Chilean mother and a Peruvian father. Growing up in Northwest Washington, D.C., Hakim was exposed to Jimi Hendrix, Al Green, Willie Colón, The Beatles, Fugazi, early 2000's punk, hip-hop, go-go, and the native music of his Mother's country Chile, Nueva Canción. In his teens, he was mentored by Lorenzo “Zo!” Ferguson from The Foreign Exchange who helped him improve on piano.  Later, Hakim left his hometown for the Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2013, he moved to Brooklyn where he worked part-time at a record shop called Human Head, and got involved with the local community of musicians, playing with artists like the Onyx Collective and Jesse and Forever, who have since been featured on his albums.

Nick Hakim self-released his debut EP, Where Will We Go (Pt I & II) in 2014. The EP was released to positive critical review and led to his signing with ATO Records.

In 2017 Hakim released Green Twins through ATO Records and toured internationally throughout 2017.

His song "Needy Bees" was featured in an episode of HBO's "Insecure".
